What Ought I Do...My BioEthical Value by Joseph Oriko Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common genetic (inherited) diseases in America. It is also one of the most serious. It mainly affects the lungs and the digestive systems in the body, causing breathing problems and problems with digesting foods. Since CF has no cure, what ought I do when I find out that my pregnant wife caries a child with CF? Bringing a child with CF into the world will be very demanding, the diagnosis and treatment of the kid will be very expensive for me to afford. The education of the kid, the social and ethical issues, including the impact of the disease to the kid, will be hard to handle, not to mention the already existing reality that CF persons do not live long. Keeping that in mind, I am confident of what I value as an individual, I value family, human dignity, intimacy, opportunity, and doing what is morally right. I believe in family, family is love, understanding, and support. I believe in human dignity, I believe that through human dignity all persons should be treated right regardless of who they are, they should be respected and given opportunities that are not only good for them, but also show generosity and co-operation in this world we live in. I believe in intimacy because it is a commitment I make to people I love especially my family. I believe in doing what is morally right since I was brought up like that, doing what is morally right is one of the greatest thing I have ever learnt that builds a foundation for strong family believes, believing in opportunity is the hope of every man, a chance to try new things for the sole aim of achieving. In my believes, I will face hard ethical problems, my extended family for example will be so much worried that perhaps they have a CF gene. My society will look upon my child as a sick individual, and getting an insurance company to help pay the bills for treatment will be a hustle. Fortunately, I have chosen to have the child, My wife and I are ready to tackle any obstacles, we are sure that what we believe should not be questioned, our child is a human being. |
